The Coffee Truth: Innovating Home Roasting in Singapore

Hello, coffee lover. This is Pak Kopi, and welcome to another edition of the Coffee Truth or Dare series. I am currently in Singapore, accompanied by my partner, Raymond Lei.

Raymond contacted me after seeing my TEDx talk and various videos I have produced. He is deeply interested in my work and, after purchasing a home roaster, was absolutely blown away by the quality. We have been discussing coffee ever since. He was so impressed that he traveled from his location to Singapore, where we have been testing our prototype machines.

Our mission is clear: we want to encourage people to roast their own coffee at home. This is the single biggest factor in improving your cup. Once you experience the difference, you truly understand what we are talking about.

The Process and the Prototype

As you can see, we have a lot of equipment here. We have been roasting and comparing different machines using the same batch of green coffee sourced from Guatemala. This consistency allows us to accurately compare the performance of each unit.

Raymond has been handling tasks such as chaff collection and testing two different prototypes. At this stage, the prototypes may not look perfect, but that is part of the nature of innovation. Our goal is to ensure the machine is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Once we identify the best motor, the best fan, and the optimal configuration, we will refine the industrial design so that it looks great on any countertop.

Engineering the Perfect Roast

While popcorn poppers might seem similar to home roasters, they function quite differently. Each machine has distinct motor strengths and fan configurations. A critical issue we are addressing is airflow; if a fan is too strong, it can cool the coffee chamber too rapidly while the beans are heating, resulting in uneven roasting.

We are meticulously selecting the best components to maximize the function of the machine. After optimizing the mechanics, we will focus on the design, ensuring the final product is ready for the market.

Why It Matters

The ultimate goal here is to “wake the world up” to the power of the best coffee. The quality of your morning brew can genuinely change your day. A great cup of coffee helps you attract positive things throughout the day, while a poor cup might lead to a jittery, unproductive experience rather than a smooth, sustained energy boost.

We hope that more people will begin roasting their own coffee to learn the true nature of this beloved beverage. By using the same coffee and the same roast levels across different machines, we can objectively determine which technology delivers the freshest, best-tasting results.

Thank goodness that Asha brought along her grinder and brewer, allowing us to taste the great stuff immediately. This machine is coming to market, though it will take some time. We are taking the necessary steps to ensure we deliver the best machine at the best price, engineered to work flawlessly.

Stay tuned, coffee lovers. We are on our way.
