What’s the best way to make coffee starting from roast beans? I’m happy to grind them myself, but can’t be bothered with much in the way of any more kitchen appliances.

Starting with already roasted coffee, there are two more steps needed to turn the roasted coffee into a liquid you can drink: grinding, and brewing. That means you need two more pieces of equipment: a grinder and a brewer (the exception to this is having one machine that does both: for example, a drip coffee machine that both grinds and brews).

What appliances you choose to use all depends upon your preferences of how you like your coffee (strong, medium, or weak), and your budget.

The biggest bang for the buck, IMO, is a burr grinder (under $50), and a Moka Pot (also called a Stovetop Espresso, about $30). This will make a nice strong cup of coffee for a relatively low expense.

If you like your coffee weaker, and your budget is lower, you could use a simple blade grinder (under $15), combined with a French Press (also under $15).
